TMJ

Russell has for 20 years been involved especially in the treatment of Head, Jaw and Facial pain and dysfunction. He receives many referrals from other Chiropractors and Dentists for the management of such conditions.

Russell has spent many years working with orthopedically minded Dentists (both in their clinics and elsewhere), co-treating TMJ patients.

He has lectured throughout Australia to Chiropractors and Dentists in this field and has contributed to an internationally published textbook (Headache and Orofacial Pain, Elsevier Press 2010).

Russell’s approach with TMJ dysfunction centres on thoroughly examining and diagnosing the cause of pain and applying appropriate management to relieve symptoms. This treatment, combined with specific jaw exercises is often successful in alleviating the problem quickly and inexpensively.

Some patients however, may have significant jaw damage and may require the services of an appropriately experienced and qualified Dentist (the average dentist has very little expertise in treating jaw problems). Dental treatment can often require the prescription of a removable appliance worn temporarily inside the mouth to change jaw joint position and the way the teeth come together.

If this is successful, then possibly no more treatment is required but in some cases the dental Bite needs to be permanently changed to gain lasting relief from jaw symptoms. In this case orthodontic type treatment can be the answer. Fortunately most jaw problems don’t require this degree of management.

A full description of the problem is outlined in the initial consultation together with a suggested treatment plan. All costs are explained up-front and choices can be made as to the level of involvement in the plan.
